I’m SO pumped about Petite’s costume. I know it’s semi-ridiculous to dress my 7 month old in a costume. But I’m excited and I’m doing it. (So there.)
My brother’s girlfriend actually found the idea and texted it to my mom (I know. Awesome, right?) We were trying to decide the best way to do it and like a sign from above, Katie over at Texas Tigers posted a tutorial for a sweet little tulle pumpkin dress she made for her daughter.
It was the final inspiration I needed to get moving on Petite’s ghost.
I couldn’t find a white “crocheted” headband at the HobLob when I went – but they had a spool of the same stuff (I’m not sure what the technical term is… it’s what I used for the body and straps. If you’re cool with it, I’ll just call it the elastic…), in white, for 50% off. I also bought 5 1/4 yards of white tulle. The 1/4 yard is essential for the headpiece, my friends. And finally one piece of basic black felt. Petite is wearing a 6 month onesie these days, for size purposes.
This is so easy- you can knock it out in a couple of hours this weekend! I’m SUPER tempted to make one for myself.
Measure from your little’s armpit to the tips of their toes and add a few inches. With the final volume, the tulle will “puff” and not be as long as the length you cut it. Double that length to cut your strips. Or, be efficient and fold the tulle in half and chop it up already folded. Then measure around your little’s chest, hitting just under the arm pit, to get the length you’ll need for the elastic. If you’re using a headband, no need to measure.
I also attached Jojo made and attached straps so it wouldn’t shift around.
Jojo is fancy and knows how to sew a French seam, so I let her. I’m so generous. You know I have an endearing relationship with my glue gun, but it just wasn’t cutting it on this project.
This part is super hard – so pay attention. Kidding. It’s not hard. Stretch the elastic so the holes get bigger and pull the tulle through, threading the loose ends into the folded loop and pull tight. Also, I’ve seen it done where the elastic is showing but I didn’t want it to be visible… so when you look at the finished picture you’ll see that the tulle was pulled through the holes at the upper part of the elastic. (Does that make ANY sense!?)
We did one whole row (the “top” row) with every hole and then a second row just filling in as needed. I could have easily added another five yards of tulle, but I didn’t want Petite to be *completely* miserable on her first Halloween! On that note, Petite will wear a onesie under the dress. If it’s chilly, we’ll go long sleeves and if it’s hot she’ll wear a short sleeve. It’ll be more comfortable for her and her sweet baby skin. Jojo also made a precious headband and puff out of the elastic and
some tulle scraps 1/4 yard of tulle.
The face was just free-handed out of black felt (the cheapie kind!) and as much as I wanted to hot glue it on, Jojo stitched it. Thanks Jojo, for doing it right!
Happy Halloween from my Booooo-tiful Sweet Petite!
