Are we over chalkboards yet? No? Good. (If you said yes, I’m pretending I didn’t hear you.)
I LOVE my chalkboard wall and I really like using the concept to personalize my home and space. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to create a mini, portable, perfectly sized chalkboard for the Blinds.com Roller Shade Design Challenge.
It’s perfect for a non permanent experiment with chalkboard decorating, would be a great addition to a kids/play room, would be amazing on the front door for a party, or to take to someone else’s home if you’re hosting a party with them… Seriously – it’s size and portability make it just about perfect for anything! Here’s how you do it:
Extend the roller shade and paint with two coats of chalkboard paint. Let dry thoroughly between coats. (I mean… rough, right?)
To make the border “frame” (Thank you Elsie and Emma and the A Beautful Mess app for the inspiration…) lightly trace an oval in the center-ish of your shade (or square, or heart, or….).
Use a pencil eraser and acrylic craft paint to make the helter-skelter polkadots. I didn’t measure, plan or have a pattern. I just did it.
Go back over the dots that need a little more coverage.
Prime your new chalkboard (lightly rub a piece of chalk all over it and then erase) and get it ready for action! The roller shade material takes the paint beautifully and erases with a simple paper towel. One of the best parts of this portable chalkboard “wall” is that it can be flat on a table to write on or decorate… Sometimes it’s h.a.r.d. to write vertically. I like writing flat!
I uploaded some other fun ideas I had to Instagram – a baby shower sign, personalized birthday banner, a Psalm I love (trying to memorize one? perfect place for it!) and more – come take a gander.
