Is there anything that HASN’T been blinged yet? From cell phones and cases, to glasses (the eye and wine version) and staplers – I think it’s just about all been done. And I think that is a FABULOUS thing. Really, how can too much bling be a bad thing? So when Darice shipped me a giant box of their Gemz and Bling on A Roll, my sparkle loving heart just about burst!
I’ve really been loving the wrapped rhinestone bracelets that have been popping up in stores like JCrew and on Etsy and with summer peeking its head around the corner – which means flip flip season – I knew I had to combine the two and create my own wrapped bling flip flops.
I love how they turned out! Here’s how to make your own:
For this project you’ll need a pair of flip flops with skinny straps. These are a very inexpensive pair from a store that start with W and ends in MART; your favorite quick dry super glue; embroidery thread (you’ll use almost a whole skein); and Darice Bling on a Roll (I used the 2-across in silver); and scissors.
Loosely measure two strips of bling to be just a little longer than each strap. Start where the straps meet in the toe and measure towards the bottom of the shoe.
Use a small dot of super glue to adhere the last four gems onto the strap. The gems will adjust as you wrap the thread around them so don’t glue it all down now! Slide the bling as low into the meeting point of the two straps as possible.
Cut a four foot(ish) length of thread. I just eye-balled it. If you run out while wrapping, just tie more on and keep going. FOld the threat in half and slide the folded end under the strap with the bling.
Bring the loose ends over the strap and through the loop at the end of the folded piece. Pull tight moving the thread below the first set of gems. If your glue is still wet, you can smoosh the thread into some of the glue for extra staying power.
It’s time to wrap! Once you get the hang of it, the wrapping goes rather quickly. Criss Cross the thread under the strap and bring it up over the strap. Wrap the threads, going in opposite directions, around the strap and between the gems two or three times per space, crossing under, then over, then under, etc.
When you get to the end, tie the thread off in a square knot and secure with a generous dot of super glue under the last set of gems and the thread.. Continue to wrap the tread around to the base of the strap, if desired. A generous second helping of glue will help it stay in position.
Continue on the remaining straps, until all the straps are covered with thread and bling!
Your very own wrapped bling flip flops! I can’t wait to wear these with my coral sundress! The bling on a roll is super easy to work with. I like that it is securely attached. Darice also offers a stick on version if you just wanted to add a little embellishment and not a whole foot of bling.
BUT WAIT! THERE’s MORE!
(I feel like one of those obnoxious info-mercials.)
I was inspired by a friend to bling my camera strap! I can’t even wait to show you how cute it turned out! Come back tomorrow and see how I used bling on a roll to dress up my “Party Camera”.
