Two of our upstairs bedrooms have extremely unique floor to ceiling arched windows. They were one of the selling points of the house for me. But when designing Lapin’s nursery, I knew I wanted to have some black out curtains to pull over that giant window for nap and bed time. The windows already have plantation shutters but the arch was still exposed and the shutters don’t block out all the light.
So the easy answer is to just hang curtains, right? When have I ever done any thing easily??
Lucky for me, Hi, Sugarplum! was in the process of updating her little girl’s room and created a pelmet from lightweight foam board. Genius, I tell ya! She goes through the process pretty step by step, so I won’t.
Mine is 18 inches, top to bottom and 8 feet across. I couldn’t find any foam board big enough to span the width without needing to be reinforced in a big way. While wondering around Home Depot with Jojo, we saw sheets of house insulation. It was 8 feet long. It was $13. It was meant to be.
The basics: 1. Gray fabric almost the exact same color as the gray paint on the walls. 2. Batting by the yard. 3. The insulation foam. 4. Staple gun (and a hot glue gun OR duct tape a la Hi, Sugarplum!).
We started by cutting it down to size and wrapping it with el cheapo batting. I hot glued it to keep it in place and then Jojo came back around with the nail gun. We should have just duct taped it. 🙂 When the batting was secure, we did the exact same thing with the fabric.
What I didn’t take a picture of is the precious fabric that is on the back. About six inches of the valance hangs below the peak of the arched window and it was oooglay from the driveway – so Jojo finished the back so it would be pretty!
I glued the doilies on to try to mimic the flowers I painted in the gray section. Not my most favorite thing in the room. And mounting was super duper easy! I screwed two 12 inch-ish pieces of scrap 2×2 from the inside of the shelves out. Then one medium screw from the outside of the valance into the 2×2. Can you even imagine how heavy this would be if it was wood? I’m pretty sure it weighs less than 3 lbs. Not kidding. It nicely hides the curtain rod and arched window and adds a little something to the room.
