A cake smash is an absolutely wonderful way to celebrate a birthday and get memorable photographs of your baby. The images taken at a cake smash are unique, memorable and make incredible decor and gifts.
WHAT TO EXPECT
For the safety and comfort of everyone, baby sets the pace of the sake smash session.
Some sessions only last a few minutes while others take more time to warm up. Ideally, baby will dig right in and go all-out, but more often than not, baby needs a little coaxing and gentle guidance. Don’t worry – we have lots of tricks! Parents are typically highly involved in the cake smash process. Because of this, we recommend that you be prepared to be photographed, be ready for a bit of a mess, and definitely bring a change of clothes.
Most babies enjoy their cake smash more if they are familiar with the the star of the show — cake! Please let baby experience cake prior to the session. It’s usually very different from what they usually eat and can sometime be confusing!
WHAT TO WEAR
Choosing an outfit is one of the most enjoyable parts of a cake smash! We highly recommend building from the outfit then choosing a cake and decor to keep a cohesive and intentional look. Here are a few guidelines:
- Choose colors that complement the first birthday theme, your home, or your color preferences.
- Textural details look fantastic on camera (ruffles, tulle, embroidery, denim, etc)
- Accessories can be a cute way to add details – but don’t be surprised if baby isn’t interested in wearing them!
- Make sure the outfit is washable!
- We will take some shots before the cake smash starts. The two “sessions” can use the same or different attire.
- Sometimes, simpler is better. A onesie, diaper cover, etc can be just as good as a whole outfit!
CHOOSING A CAKE
The most important item for a cake smash session! Lighter cakes photograph much better photographed and look much more appropriate when smushed all over baby. Pure white frosting can be difficult to photograph – but pastels to jewel tones are beautiful choices…. just stay away from red! Sprinkles, stripes, colored accents, and frosting decorations look great on camera. Cupcakes are just as effective and look adorable on camera.
We are happy to provide a cake for you OR you can provide your own (we’ll make some recommendations, if you’d like). If we’re ordering the cake, please confirm your vision at least 2 weeks ahead of your session.
We like to be prepared for clean up before the session even starts! We will have plenty of towels and wipes for cleaning up baby as well as a plastic bag for the cake smash clothes – but we highly recommend planning a post-smash bath. Please bring a clean set of clothes (at least a shirt!) for yourself.
All inclusive Cake Smash Sessions begin at $350
